Konjaku Monogatari, Chapter 27, No. 19
The Fox Who Entered a Man's Home in the Form of His Wife.

In what are now ancient times, the wife of a poor tinker who lived in
the capital had gone out at night when it got dark, having important business.
She had set out on the main road, but was late in coming home. Just when her
husband was wondering "why is she so late in coming home?", his wife came in.
Then, a short while later, a wife with the exact same face, and not a single
slight difference in features came in.
When the husband saw this, he became bewildered to no end. "No matter
which way you look at this, one must be a fox." he thought, and drawing his
sword her ran up to the wife who came in after the first, and as he was about
to run the sword into her, the wife said, crying, "What is this now? Why would
you do such a thing to me?". And when he ran up to kill the wife who entered
first, she too rubbed her hands together and wept.
Then the man thought about his predicament, and became quite confused,
yet he came to think that the first wife was the more suspicious of the two.
And, when he grabbed her, that wife passed unspeakable odiferous urine. Unable
to stand the smell, he released her. Upon this she suddenly turned into a fox,
and ran out into the main street through an opening in the door. Then the fox
ran off into the night, barking "kon! kon!" Thereupon the man was overcome
with regret and dispair, but there was nothing that he could do.
Considering what happened, he was a man without thought. Had he
thought but a little, he could have captured and tied down both the wives, upon
which it would have become clear who was the real wife. But most
unfortunately, the fox escaped. Here the people of the village gathered, and
there was much commotion. The fox had done something most base, and yet had
managed to get away with its life. Seeing the wife on the main road, the fox
changed into her form and devised its scheme.
Therefore, when this sort of thing happens, it is best to calm one's
heart, and think it over. Luckily, the real wife wasn't killed, and people
said that was good, and so the story has been told.
